The N recently sat down with Degrassi’s own Andrea Lewis to talk shop. In addition to acting, Andrea has been focusing on another creative endeavor – music. She’s set to release her debut album in January and has just completed her first video for the song “Superwoman.” Get caught up with a little Q&A;, and check out her first-hand account of the music video process.

In Her Own Words

Hi guys! I’m very excited because I just shot my first music video yesterday. It’s for a song I co-wrote called “Superwoman” and it’s on the radio in Canada right now, doing pretty well (yay!). And we’ll release it in the US soon, and then I have a full album coming out in January (I really hope you’ll like it!)

But this was my first video, and I was a little nervous. I had fears about — basically that I would look stupid. I sing to myself all the time in my room or in the shower, but doing it on film is a whole other story! And it didn’t help that the night before the shoot, I happened to be performing at this club called the Reverb in Toronto, and I ended up coming home really late from it — like 1 o’clock in the morning. And then I had to get up around like 6:30. So I got some sleep… lol.

But it didn’t really matter because as soon as I walked on the set, I was actually really excited, and kind of — I don’t know, not believing it, I guess? Because I’m so used to working on Degrassi or shooting television shows. It was weird to think ‘this is my own music video?’

I wasn’t used to being the only one that the camera is on — you really have to put your all into it. Whereas on Degrassi where there’s a whole bunch of different characters, so we can play off each other’s energy, and it’s a little bit easier.

And of course, on Degrassi we’ll shoot a couple different scenes throughout the day. And they all have different emotions and you do different things in them. But this was like ONE SONG, the whole day. I was worried that I would get home and not be able to get “Superwoman” out of my head. But I was actually good, I listened to it and it was like ‘hmm, this is normal.’ I think I’m used to rehearsing a song over and over for performances.

But this whole thing was so much fun… first of all I got to bring my friends Melissa and Rachel that I’ve known since I was four years old. They’re like my sisters practically, so I figured why not have them in the video? And the whole crew was really nice and friendly, and the make-up artists and stylists were really cool — the style is all really cool and casual. The vibe is very chillin’. It’s a very chillin’ vibe.

I’m really happy with it! Well, there was this one moment where I was supposed to be spinning around in heels, and I almost tripped and killed myself. But I didn’t die, and they’ll cut that part out, I hope. lol.

Anyway, I hope you all really like the video, and I hope you go out and support my album when it comes out in January!

Q&A; Time…

How long have you been singing?
My whole entire life — since I started talking, basically. I started taking music really seriously — like started writing songs — when I was about 12 years old.

Do your friends from the Degrassi cast like your music?
They’re all really supportive. They come out to see me sing, and whenever they hear my songs on the radio they call me like ‘I’m listening to you right now!’

What is the song about and what does it mean to you?
The song is just a really happy, empowering love song, that’s how I like to describe it. It’s basically just about when you meet that one person that makes you feel so amazing and so great about yourself and makes you feel like… Superwoman, basically.

Is it about any guy in particular?
When I write I like to incorporate friends’ stories that they tell me, or sometimes I’ll watch a movie and get inspiration. And I just thought about how I would like to meet that one person that makes me feel like Superwoman.

What’s your favorite music video?
I have so many favorites, but right now at this moment, even though it’s kind of an older video but I still love watching it — it would probably be “Me, Myself and I” by Beyoncé.
