In the Press: Hamilton Spectator Highlights Linda Schuyler’s $1 Million Heritage Donation

The legacy of Degrassi extends far beyond television screens. In the Saturday, September 20, 2025 edition of The Hamilton Spectator, franchise co-creator Linda Schuyler was cited for her significant philanthropic contributions to heritage preservation in Paris, Ontario.

The article, titled “Artists want voice in Bawcutt redevelopment,” covers a grassroots movement to transform the historic Bawcutt Centre into a community arts hub. While detailing the site’s history as the former Paris Old Town Hall, the piece notes that the building was preserved thanks to a major financial contribution from the Degrassi matriarch:

“The municipality purchased the former Paris Old Town Hall in 2016 with a $1-million donation from ‘Degrassi’ franchise co-creator Linda Schuyler.”

Schuyler, who grew up in Paris, Ontario, provided the funds to ensure the 1854 Gothic structure—believed to be one of the oldest of its kind in Canada—remained in public hands. This clipping documents how the long-term commercial success of Degrassi has translated into tangible investments in Canadian arts, culture, and heritage preservation.
